Chick Comics and the Jesuits

As a child somehow I was given some chick comic books. These are not comics about chickens, but a series of cartoons by Jack Chick, and used as evangelism tools... kind of like tracts with a difference. Some of them were good and they were generally all interesting to read.

For example, one comic called Alberto was all about a Jesuit who tried to destroy churches, and as a child I read this and others by Jack Chick and formed opinions about Catholics, and specifically Jesuits.

At the same time as this was occuring I was attending a Catholic High school called Marian St Stanislaus College which became Emmaus Colllege later and there was catechism in class as well as other things familiar to Roman Catholics, and I learned a lot of these and found Christ in them. However in the back of my mind I wondered about the "secret" things the priests and others might be doing that we didn't know about.

As time has gone on however I have come to realise that for the most part, the Jesuits are some of the best people that God has. Yes there may be a bad apple in the barrel, but nearly every barrel has a bad apple. If you are looking for problems you will be most likely to find something.

So that was the issue with Jack Chick and his comics. He wanted to find problems with Catholicism and Jesuits, and so he seemed to find them everywhere he looked, and then he wrote them into his comic books so everyone else could know too.

I am glad that when I decided to follow Christ that from that time on, somehow He overlooked my problems and stopped looking for them. And this is the view we should take towards each other who loves the Lord.

A few years ago I read another book which along with some personal relationships with Catholics who genuinly love Christ and desire to serve and follow him, has changed my mind about some of these things.

Did you know that the Jesuits brought millions of people to a knowledge of God and didn't use swords to do it... they sent missionaries throughout Asia and South America and other places. Did you know that all over the world are thousands of schools started by Jesuits which teach people to read, write and love God. (a lot of them are uncannily called St Francis Xavier College)

Put aside your preconceptions and any ideas that come from Chick Comics and accept the Catholics and Jesuits you know as people who love Christ like you do, and let them love you too.
